{"id":309,"date":"2010-12-13T21:22:00","date_gmt":"2010-12-13T21:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/13\/apm-strategy-activities\/"},"modified":"2010-12-13T21:22:00","modified_gmt":"2010-12-13T21:22:00","slug":"apm-strategy-activities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/13\/apm-strategy-activities\/","title":{"rendered":"APM, strategy &amp; activities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I work on Application Portfolio Management activities in a simple way.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing is to assess the mix of applications and their value to business.<\/p>\n<p>The second thing is to determine the organization goals that in my case is mainly reduce the cost of applications maintenance and seek the most cost effective IT environment.<\/p>\n<p>Third, how do we evaluate it?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Goal Alignment<\/u>: is an application aligned to the business needs?<\/li>\n<li><u>Performance Optimization<\/u>: what value do we obtain from each invested $ in the application?<\/li>\n<li><u>Service Mix Optimization<\/u>: is the platform where the application is deployed the one aligned with the company strategy? is it a legacy application? does it follow the standard processes? is it too customized?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To do all these activities I implement different processes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Application Portfolio Evaluation Review (APER).<\/li>\n<li>Service Support Cost analysis (each 6 months).<\/li>\n<li>Revision of the business processes of an application: its criticality, its performance.<\/li>\n<li>Revision of the strategic platforms: capabilities they offer, how they should be deployed, architecture revisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these activities are&nbsp;part&nbsp;of the long term strategy that we cannot&nbsp;forget.&nbsp;The revisions done under this perspective are very productive when decisions at this level are necessary.
