So let&#8217;s start with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Empire theory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Empire Theory is a framework for understanding and practicing competitive strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An empire is a group of coordinated actors that operate around some central power. Empires might be composed of players, resources, and other empires (sub-empires).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Empire Theory as one way to understand <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>power<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Domain of competition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>government, business, sport, music&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Power class<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>High<\/strong> is the central power that defines an empire\u2019s zone of coordination. It plays the largest role in determining the distribution of resources within the empire.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Mid<\/strong> are individuals or groups that have sufficient power to challenge high\u2019s control. Mid players will often have smaller empires of their own.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Low<\/strong> are individuals or groups that can challenge mid but cannot challenge high. Low has the largest population and the least power.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Outside<\/strong> is any actor that is not coordinated by the high power.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vitality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A live player<\/strong><\/span> is a person or group of people that is able to do things they have not done before.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A dead player<\/strong><\/span> is a person or group of people that is working off a script, incapable of doing new things.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alignment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Represent the concordance and discordance of direction between groups and the anchor. Here the anchor can be &#8220;you&#8221;, the component with highest power or other component you want to analyze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As in stakeholder management, it&#8217;s important to understand which stakeholders are aligned with the anchor. In Burja map, you simplify the alignment by colors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Green: high alignment with anchor&#8217;s purpose (allies)<\/li><li>Yellow: partial alignment with anchor&#8217;s purpose (to be defined or neutral position)<\/li><li>Red: low alignment with anchor&#8217;s purpose (enemies).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We can add more layers on this classification, for instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6900\" srcset=\"http:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-3.png 800w, http:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-3-300x68.png 300w, http:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-3-768x173.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To go deep in an analysis of power is key to focus on the interactions of power. It&#8217;s different the interactions between high-high entities than high-low entities. The different shapes on this type of relationships are very different in nature and in impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;<strong>Power<\/strong> can be used to accomplish a very broad range of goals. As such, many kinds of actors will aim to acquire power in the pursuit of their goals. The more effective they are and the better their understanding of reality is, the likelier they are to seek power.<\/p><cite>Samo Burja<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origin of Burja maps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Samo Burja is a sociologist and the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckanalysis.com\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bismarck Analysis<\/a>, which analyzes institutions, from governments to companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amongst other things, Samo Burja has developed <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/samoburja.com\/empire-theory-part-i-competitive-landscape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Empire Theory<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, \u201ca framework for understanding and practicing competitive strategy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By combining Empire Theory with mapping, we can assess people and organizations in terms of power, and also evaluate possible strategic plays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focus: What + Who<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Burja mapping introduce themselves as an extra analysis tool where they coexist with Wardley Maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Wardley Map defines the context (what) and the Burja Map defines the dynamics between relevant players (Who).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Burja Map (stakeholder analysis)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Maps has to have each of these six components: be visual, have context, position has meaning, have an anchor, represent movement, and show components. Burja maps have these 6 characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Burja maps are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">visual<\/span>.<\/li><li>They have a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">specific context<\/span> (the empire),a specific team, organization, company&#8230;<\/li><li>They have a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">position<\/span> (High, Mid, Low, or Out), relative to the highest power class.<\/li><li>They have an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anchor<\/span>: it could be &#8220;you&#8221; (alignment), the highest power (power) or the best practices (vitality).<\/li><li>They have at least three forms of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">movement<\/span>: power, vitality, and alignment (alliance and competition).<\/li><li>They have specific types of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">components<\/span>: an empire, player, or resource. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Anchor and movement are linked.
