{"id":7359,"date":"2021-04-03T13:40:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-03T11:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/?p=7359"},"modified":"2023-03-17T14:41:28","modified_gmt":"2023-03-17T13:41:28","slug":"fttx-and-gpon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/2021\/04\/03\/fttx-and-gpon\/","title":{"rendered":"FTTx and GPON"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Some notes for my poor memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some definitions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Optical Line Terminal (OLT)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiber to the home (FTTH)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiber to the antenna (FTTA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiber to the building (FTTB)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiber to the node (FTTN)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiber to the curb (FTTC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>passive optical network (PON) technologies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Point to point (PtP) architecture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Better bandwidth as there are not many equipment between sender and receiver.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower latency (delay between sending and receiving data)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More reliability: more reliable as there are fewer potential points of failure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Disadvantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Equipment cost is higher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Installation costs is higher as it requires laying individual fiber optic cables to each home or business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher maintenance costs: as there more individual components.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON)\u00a0architecture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Equipment cost is more affordable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower installation costs, as it only requires a single fiber optic cable to be run to each neighborhood or building, then it drives the lines to each individual end point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fewer individual components and can be easier and less expensive to maintain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Disadvantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bandwidth could be compromised in some cases as multiple users share the same OLT, which can lead to congestion during peak usage times.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher latency (as there are more equipment in the middle).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less reliable: due to potential issues with the OLT or a fiber optic splitter.
