This made me think about bike adoption in cities.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\">I\u00b4m <span class=\"hps\">becoming older<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and I am\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hps\">able to look<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">perspective<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the evolution of cities<\/span> I visited 10 years ago<span class=\"hps\">.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">This week I was,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in this order,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Berlin<\/span>, Amsterdam <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Barcelona.<\/span> I will focus on the <span class=\"hps\">quality of life<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of those living<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">there<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in terms of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">use of the bike<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">10 years<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">ago<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and today<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\">So,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><strong><span class=\"hps\">Berlin<\/span> <\/strong><span class=\"hps\"><strong>has not changed<\/strong>,<\/span> so<span class=\"hps\"> many people<\/span> use <span class=\"hps\">the bike.<\/span> It was 2003 t<span class=\"hps\">he<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">first time I visited<\/span> Berlin, i<span class=\"hps\">n summer; This time\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hps\">in winter<\/span>. You can see <span class=\"hps\">children<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">wrapped in<\/span> their <span class=\"hps\">coats<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that can<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">barely<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">move<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">themselves<\/span>, but here <span class=\"hps\">they<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Here<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the motto is:<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">one street, one<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">bike lane.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><strong>In <span class=\"hps\">Amsterdam there are<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">more bikes<\/span> <\/strong><span class=\"hps\"><strong>if possible<\/strong>, in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">some areas<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">it is the main<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">transport,<\/span> you can find <span class=\"hps\">piled<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">bikes, wood-bikes, fat-bikes. <\/span><span class=\"hps\">exclusive<\/span> city-bikes<span class=\"hps\">.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">I asked if they still have the problem of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hps\">bike<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">theft,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and they still have it<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">If<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">this<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">enormous love<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">for<\/span> the bikes that <span class=\"hps\">Dutch<\/span> people have <span class=\"hps\">y<\/span><span class=\"hps\">ou\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hps\">apply their knowledge<\/span> o<span class=\"hps\">n<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">design<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the bikes, the consequence is easy:<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">you have<\/span> all kind of <span class=\"hps\">bikes<\/span><span class=\"hps\">.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">They<\/span> have in The Hague a <span class=\"hps\">race<\/span> of fat-<span class=\"hps\">bikes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on the beach<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">10 years<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">ago The Netherlands was<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a pioneer in the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">use of the bike<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and today<\/span> they <span class=\"hps\">still are<\/span> on top of the list <span class=\"hps\">(at<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">least I think so<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><strong><span class=\"hps\">Barcelona<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">was the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">big surprise to me<\/span><\/strong>. <span class=\"hps\">The first time<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">I visited<\/span> it <span class=\"hps\">there were only one<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">bike lane<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on Diagonal Avenue and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the sea-port area<\/span>. Now you can find thousand of bike lanes, a <span class=\"hps\">municipal<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">bike service<\/span>, lots of <span class=\"hps\">bikes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">parked on <\/span><span class=\"hps\">streetlights<\/span><span class=\"hps\">&#8230;<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">The change<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of such a large<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and complex city as Barcelona cannot\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hps\">only be measured<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">by the existence of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">bike-lanes<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">but<\/span> you can see the change <span class=\"hps\">(maybe others do not agree with me<\/span>). Bikes have won some space of the <span class=\"hps\">streets to the cars<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">In contrast<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">I look at<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"><strong>Madrid<\/strong>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and I see no<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">change<\/span>, the cars <span class=\"hps\">still own<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the streets.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read an article about the the positive impact of the use of the bike in Paris after the people receive a monthly compensation for going to job by bike, promoting a set of behaviors that benefits the whole city.
