{"id":5811,"date":"2009-02-22T17:28:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-22T16:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/?p=5811"},"modified":"2021-09-22T17:46:56","modified_gmt":"2021-09-22T15:46:56","slug":"pm10-assessment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/2009\/02\/22\/pm10-assessment\/","title":{"rendered":"PM10 assessment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When dealing with a team of project managers, to work with them to improve their capabilities and be able to be consistent and equal with every body, you need a framework that enable you to have common path forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PM10, or project management 10 is a framework we all use in CSC for the assessment and common understanding about where a project manager is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The assessment sheet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a basic spreadsheet with a lot of intelligence and data there that can give you a broad understanding of the concrete experiences a professional has. To enter the data the first time is very tedious, but once done it&#8217;s a good basis for discussion. It looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-24-1024x486.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-24-1024x486.png 1024w, https:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-24-300x142.png 300w, https:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-24-768x364.png 768w, https:\/\/joapen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-24.png 1398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>PM10 assessment sheet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The process is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The project manager enters all initial data in the spreadsheet.<\/li><li>The project manager and the team lead review the data and try to gain understanding of all experiences and work done as project manager.<\/li><li>Then, both define a set of needs and priorities.<\/li><li>An action plan is defined for the next fiscal year. <\/li><li>During the fiscal year, a meeting per quarter is done (30 min is enough) to review the progress on the work done, informal meetings help too when it&#8217;s possible.<\/li><li>At the end of the fiscal year the assessment sheet is review and updated with the work done and the progress done.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experience using this tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I find so many pros and small amount of cons to using this tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pros:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It&#8217;s common to everybody.<\/li><li>It&#8217;s very well aligned with the evolution of experiences and training.<\/li><li>It covers so many angles: technology, scope, type of project, finance volume, team volume, etc.<\/li><li>It helps to gain consensus about where someone really is.<\/li><li>It contains a common nomenclature that enable to define what other people need.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To enter and review the data is tedious, and not everybody is willing to go to this level of detail.<\/li><li>It takes time to work on it and stablish as something basic for an organization. Once done, it&#8217;s very useful, but do not expect that there is initial buy in.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most interesting things to do is when someone ask you for a project manager: &#8220;I need a PM&#8221;. Ok, but what type of PM? I send the spreadsheet and enable the requester to enter the basis of what s\/he needs.
