Prepare for rejection and other hurdles.<\/li><li>Prepare how this new &#8220;priority&#8221; fits into the rest of &#8220;top priorities&#8221; you are pushing.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2.- Launching the program<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Define the proper business KPIs that can bridge the conversation between Engineering and Finance.<\/li><li>Review how the creation of assets are done:<ul><li>Who can do it,<\/li><li>How it&#8217;s done<\/li><li>How resources are tagged<\/li><li>etc.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Define a basic process and improve it as you learn.<\/li><li>Reduce cost is an iterative process that implies understanding the end to end decisions around design and this is something it requires different loops till you find out answers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>3.- Improve your data quality and process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Tag the assets by value stream team.<\/li><li>Tag if it&#8217;s a permanent asset or a temporary asset.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>4.- Improve the way you analyze the infrastructure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have pareto principle in mind: 80% of the issues are in 20% of causes.<\/li><li>Review the data transfer routes.<\/li><li>Are you provisioning in advance the services you are going to use?<\/li><li>Reduce ephemeral instances to the minimum.<\/li><li>Teams consuming large amount of resources have to monitor them during these periods. For instance a Machine Learning training execution that is handling terabytes and high amount of CPU.<\/li><li>Automate termination of ephemeral instances or mark them with an expire date.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>5.- Review the architecture and the design<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Educate the engineers about the &#8220;cost&#8221; issue.<\/li><li>Pay attention to multi-cloud solutions and the costs of data transfers.<\/li><li>Work with them about how design and architecture can be adapted to be more effective.<\/li><li>There are many specific tips and ways to reduce cost from the design point of view. <a href=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/aws-emr-cost-optimization-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This is just an example on AWS EMR<\/a>.<\/li><li>Who is reviewing the <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/well-architected-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">well-architecture Tool<\/a> from AWS? <\/li><li>Who is reviewing the <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/aws-cost-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cloud Financial Management<\/a> solutions? (similar in MS-Azure).<\/li><li>Look for duplications, yes, duplications, be sure there are not redundant assets without a business reason.<\/li><li>Think about how you can add predictability to the expenses.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Closing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This list of steps and considerations are just the starting point.
