What is the cloud?

Weird things I have listened:

  • It is a new IT architecture,
  • It is the web 3.0,
  • It is a cool name for the grid,
  • You have the computers in your building but I use it, renting of servers!.

Well, you probably have listened other ones.

The cloud could be defined as a way to deliver and consume information technology services.

It is an emerging market / industry, the National Institue of Standards and Technology (NIST) is defining better all aspects around the cloud.

A model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources…that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

To identify is something is “cloud” try to look for these features:

  • On-Demand Self-Service
  • Broad network access
  • Resource pooling
  • Rapid elasticity
  • Measured service
