SearchGPT, trying to crack main google’s moat

OpenAI has launched SearchGPT in restricted mode SearchGPT, and in some months is expected to be opened for more users.

The main focus for OpenAI has been on “find an answer”, where they have been projecting all their efforts.

But this seems not to be enough, they need to jump into “search answers” where Google is the dominant.

Some questions that come to my mind

  • Why do they do it?
  • Is it because the existing ways to make revenue are not enough and they need Ads?
  • How much money do they need to stop depending on external capital?
  • Why do they pivot towards a competitive space where Google is so dominant?

Some data to follow up

From Statista,

  • In May 2023 Google = 87.65% Vs Bing = 6.81%
  • In Jan 2024 Google = 81.95% Vs Bing = 10.51%

An hypothesis

OpenAI has seen how Bing is increasing 40% of their traffic, and they assume is thanks to CoPilot.
