Quantum computing, some basis

I’m not a quantum computing expert, I’m trying to learn how the ecosystem is organized, what problems is quantum computing trying to solve, what are the different areas…

So this is the final diagram I did for myself, that will evolve, but right now it works for me.

The summary of the important aspects is:

  • Quantum computing need to be divided in 3 major areas: the sensors, communications and the computers.
  • The models is all the theory around it, and these models try to solve specific problems that quantum models provide solutions (in theory).
  • The maths around the models are quite good, the problem is the step to move all this into the physical world.
  • Physical realization has obstacles that companies are trying to solve. Depending on the 3 areas mentioned above the solutions will be found in 2-3 years or 15-20 years (here many variables need to be taken into account).
  • Each company is looking into different techcnologies, there’s not an unique solution approach.
    • Quantum gate is being used by many companies.
    • Quantum Annealing is only explored by D-Wave.
  • Error correction is present in every corner of this landscape.

Ultimate goal = Build fault tolerant quantum computers: combine many noisy physical Qubits to build a perfect logical Qubit.

Will continue learning.
