Cognitive load (John Sweller – 1988): total amount of mental effort being used in the working memory.

Sweller defines three kinds of cognitive load:

• Intrinsic cognitive load: relates to aspects of the task fundamental to the problem space.
• Extraneous cognitive load: relates to the environment rin which the task is being done.
• Germane cognitive load: relates to the aspects of the task that need special attention for learning or high performance.

Learning behaviours can help pull individuals and teams into the ‘funnel of flow’, not only by increasing their skills and capabilities, but by helping them cope constructively with negative states like anxiety and boredom.

Examples of learning behaviors that constitute constructive coping include reflecting, reframing, seeking support, and strategizing. These are all behaviors that can be practiced independently and collaboratively…
